According to the Koppen Climate Classification System, there are five major types of climates or climate groups in the world. And do you know that these climate groups are also further divided into different subtypes? Of course, different types of climates and their subtypes all feature unique characteristics differentiating them from the others. Check out this post right now to know the subtypes and characteristics of major types of climates in the world now. Here we go! Tropical climatesThe term “tropical climates” or “Megathermal climates” is used to describe the typical weather in areas with constant warm to hot temperatures. These climate zones usually has temperatures of 64℉ (18℃) and more all year-round, on average. They also see average precipitation of 59 inches annually. Tropical climates can be found in regions around the Equator, parts of South America, southern portions of Asia, the Pacific Ocean islands, so on. Biomes that have tropical climates are rainforest and savannas. About subtypes of tropical climates, well, these can be subdivided into tropical wet (rainforest) climate, tropical wet and dry climate (savanna), and tropical monsoon climate. Dry climatesThe next one of the major types of climates in the world is dry climates. Well, as the name suggests, dry climates have very little moisture and humidity in the air. The chances of precipitation are usually lower than the chances of evaporation. Dry climates also have large ranges in daily temperatures. Temperatures in the daytime can reach over 120℉ (49℃), while night temperatures may drop to less than 100℉ (37℃). If a region has dry climates, it’s usually a desert! Dry climate zones can be found in Northern Mexico, central Australia, parts of Africa, and many other places. Arid and semi-arid are two subdivisions of dry climates. In which, semi-arid climates are less drier than arid climates. Temperate climatesThe third one of the primary types of climates in the world is mesothermal or temperate climates. These climates are characterized by having mild winters and warm, humid summers. Temperate climates average temperatures of at least 50℉ (10℃) during the warmest months and between 26.6℉ and 64℉ (3℃ and 18℃) in the coldest months. These climates can be found in North America, Asia, and Europe. If subdivided, temperate climates have 3 subtypes of marine, Mediterranean climates, and humid subtropical climates. Continental climatesContinental climates of microthermal climates feature warm summers and frigid winters. Snowstorms and very low temperatures of under -22℉ (30℃) are what people living in continental climate zones can experience in winters. The places having continental climates can be found in the central regions of landmasses, or on the east coast of continents, north of 40 degrees North latitude. Subtypes of continental climates are continental subarctic (boreal) climates and humid continental climates. Polar climatesThe last one in the list of 5 main types of climates in the world is polar climates that lack a true summer. Well, in these climate zones, the temperatures never rise above 50℉ (10℃), even during summers. Tundra and massive blocks of permanent ice are things that make the places with polar climates so distinctive. And of course, as the name suggests, polar climates can be found near both poles. Tundra climates and ice cap climates are 2 subtypes of polar climates, in which, well, ice cap climates are the coldest in the world. RoundupRecently, we have learned about the major types of climates in the world, their characteristics, and subtypes as well. As you can see, each one of them comes with different unique features. And learning about them is so interesting, right?
